Taking Ajahn V to Latvia

Although Ajahn Viradhammo, a respected Buddhist monk and teacher, had been born to Latvian parents and spoke Latvian, he’d never been there. Soon after the end of the Soviet Union Nick Scott took him there and they walked across the province where his mother’s home had been. Older Latvians told them their, often harrowing, stories, younger people were interested in meditation, and everyone wanted to help these two strange characters from the West, taking them to see all manner of things. The result is an account of Latvia at a time of great change dotted with the teachings of a truly exceptional teacher. But it’s also a ‘whodunit’ as Ajahn Viradhammo wanted to find out for his mother what had happened to an apartment block in Riga. That meant dealing with shady individuals amidst the Russian mafia and the ex KGB. The result is a real ‘page turner’ that is also full of wisdom
